Lesson focus
This Grade 1 lesson introduces new vocabulary on the topic Colours and helps learners practise a simple speaking pattern: “What colour is it?” — “It’s … . It’s my favourite colour.”
Learning objectives
- Introduce new lexical items: red, yellow, green, blue.
- Practise asking and answering about colours using a modelled situation.
- Develop accurate pronunciation through focused phonetic practice.
Expected outcomes
- Subject: ask for information about an interesting object and respond appropriately.
- Systemic / activity-based: build oral sentences consciously according to communicative goals.
Lesson flow
A clear, child-friendly sequence from greeting to reflection.
1) Warm-up and classroom routines
Teacher
“Good morning, good morning,
Good morning to you!
Good morning, good morning,
I am glad to see you!”
Students
“Good morning, good morning,
We are glad to see you!”
Teacher: “How are you?”
Class: “Fine, thanks.”
Teacher: “Sit down, please.”
2) Stating the topic and purpose
Today we will learn words that name colours and practise saying them correctly in English. We will also practise asking and answering: “What colour is it?”
3) Activating prior knowledge: phonetic warm-up
The teacher introduces a visitor character, Mr. Wise Crow, and invites the children to greet him.
Mr. Wise Crow tells a short story about a toy shop and highlights the sound /j/ (as in yellow):
“Yellow yo-yo!”
“Yes, yellow… yummy, yummy.”
Repeat: j, j, j
Then learners practise the long vowel sound /uː/:
Listen and repeat: blue, two, you, room, school
4) New material: learning the colours
The teacher shows pictures (a yellow sun, green leaves, a red ball, and a blue sky). Learners listen and repeat each colour word.
Sun
Yellow
Leaves
Green
Ball
Red
Sky
Blue
Song (Track 25)
“I like red and I like blue
I like yellow and green
I like red and I like blue
I like yellow and green.”
Card practice
Learners answer the teacher’s question using the pattern: “What colour is it?”
Game: Be attentive
The teacher shows a colour card and says a sentence (sometimes correct, sometimes incorrect). If it matches, learners respond: “Yes, it’s …” If it doesn’t match, they respond: “No, it’s …”
Model dialogues (Track 26)
Bota: What colour is it?
Muni: It’s yellow. It’s my favourite colour.
Misha: What colour is it?
Olya: It’s blue. It’s my favourite colour.
Alibek: What colour is it?
Anar: It’s green. It’s my favourite colour.
Bota: What colour is it?
Misha: It’s blue. It’s my favourite colour.
Pair work
Learners show an object to a partner, ask “What colour is it?” and answer using the full pattern.
5) Movement break: “Green frogs jump”
The teacher whispers a colour to each child. When the teacher calls a colour, only the “frogs” of that colour jump: “Yellow frogs, jump!” / “Green frogs, jump!”
Workbook
- Exercise 1: Colour.
- Exercise 2: Listen and circle the correct picture.
Teacher’s note
Keep the pace lively and supportive. Quick repetition and clear gestures help learners connect words with colours.
6) Reflection and lesson wrap-up
The teacher asks: “What did you learn today?” and “What will you tell your parents about this lesson?”
Learners summarise that they learned new colour words and practised asking and answering: “What colour is it?”
The teacher highlights each child’s progress and ends with positive feedback: “Well done!”
