The translation approach to FL teaching is characterized by:

1 translation interprets the words and phrases of the foreign languages in the best possible manner

2 the use of the native language for explanation, retention and checking up

3 the development of audio-lingual skills, i.e. listening comprehension and speaking

4 the deductive explanation of grammar and the use of grammar exercises

5 never explain: act; never make a speech: ask question
