The translation approach to FL teaching is characterized by:

1) translation interprets the words and phrases of the foreign languages in the best possible manner

2) the use of the native language for explanation, retention and checking up

3) the development of audio-lingual skills, i.e. listening comprehension and speaking

4) the deductive explanation of grammar and the use of grammar exercises

5) never explain: act; never make a speech: ask question
