What are the main principles of the direct method which are still followed in contemporary Berlitz schools?

1) never translate: demonstrate;  never explain: act; never make a speech: ask question

2) the development of audio-lingual skills, i.e. listening comprehension and speaking

3) new material is presented in a dialogue form

4) translation interprets the words and phrases of the foreign language in the best possible manner

5) grammar and vocabulary are taught inductively
